Avocado Legal

Legal research with sources you can trust.

Avocado Legal lets your AI assistant search South African legislation, judgments, court rules, and legal commentary — and show you the actual source passages behind each answer.

Private research tool for approved users. It does not replace your own legal judgment.

What it is

A source-finding assistant for South African law

Avocado is building an AI-native South African legal knowledge platform: public-domain legislation and judgments become a searchable corpus, exposed to legal professionals through MCP and API tools — so research is grounded in primary sources, not generic web chat.

  • Legislation & regulations

Acts, regulations, proclamations, and official government legal texts.

  • Case law & judgments

Decisions from the Constitutional Court, SCA, High Courts, Labour Court, and related tribunals.

  • Rules & procedure

Uniform Rules, practice directives, and motion-court guidelines.

  • Commentary

Secondary material for context — not binding authority unless that is what you are researching.

How it works

Ask in your AI app. Get passages you can open.

Avocado works best when you treat it as a source-finding assistant, not a substitute for legal advice. Ask clear questions, insist on quoted passages, and check the linked documents yourself.

  1. 1

    Connect your AI assistant

Most early testers use Claude Desktop: add the Avocado Legal connector, sign in with an approved Google account, and enable it in a new chat.

  2. 2

    Ask it to search Avocado

Say “search Avocado Legal” or “use the Avocado connector” so the AI actually queries the corpus — then demand exact quotes before any summary.

  3. 3

    Read the source

Avocado returns quoted source text with links. Open the document, read the passage in context, and keep using your own legal judgment.

Who it’s for

Approved practitioners, researchers, and firms

Access is by invitation while we are in testing. The living corpus grows every day — coverage and retrieval quality improve over time; gaps and imperfect OCR are expected while the library matures.

  • Advocates and independent counsel
  • Attorneys and law-firm researchers
  • In-house counsel
  • Judicial clerks and academic researchers

Avocado searches a legal corpus. It is not a place to upload client files. Keep client detail out of tool queries; your AI chat provider still sees whatever you type into the chat itself.

Why it matters

Grounded answers beat hallucinated citations

  1. 01

    Primary source passages

Exact citations and pinpoint paragraphs from statutes, judgments, and doctrine — so answers show where they came from.

  2. 02

    Living South African corpus

Not a fixed snapshot: the pipeline discovers, fetches, parses, embeds, and re-checks material as official sites publish new gazettes, judgments, and practice material.

  3. 03

    Works with your AI assistant

Connect through your existing research agent or desktop AI app via retrieval tools — not a second research silo.
